Phentermine history

  • Phentermine is the first FDA approved  drug for appetite suppression (in 1959).
  • In the 1990s, the drug was mixed with fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine in order to create Fen-Phen. However, it was found that Fen-Phen caused heart valve disease, causing up heart valve damage in up to 30% of its users, due to the fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine used in the drug.
  • Phentermine by itself is safe, and does not have the heart valve side effects, that is why FDA has retained it in the market.
  • However, phentermine on its own remained available in most countries, while the drugs combined with phentermine to make Fen-Phen were taking off the market.
  • In 2012,  a drug called Qsymia which combines phentermine and topiramate, was approved for sale in the United States, The main side effects of this formulation are dry mouth, tingling in the fingers and toes, and constipation.
